A story about how I can keep outstanding quality care at affordable rates.

posted Jun 30, 2010 2:19 PM by Marilène Gelinas   [ updated Jun 30, 2010 5:59 PM ]

My philosophy, as a person who dispenses to others some health care in the form of massage therapy, is to make my service as affordable as possible. Indeed, I have been in the past in situations where I desperately needed a massage but could not afford the luxury of a spa or the expensive services of the professionals that I knew. It was too bad for me in a sense,
because once the tension in my left shoulder and the high stress that I was subjected to day after day without treating it predisposed me to a severe injury. I took a bad fall during martial arts practice and my neck and shoulders could not find enough flexibility to smoothly absorb the high impact throw. I landed on my shoulder and dislocated it. It took months to recover from the many consequences of that accident, just enough time to make me think about how important it is not to wait to take care of ourselves when we feel that something is off, something hurts, or something is wrong with our body or our mind.
It is a good thing to acknowledge, to take care of ourselves with massage therapy when we need it the most, but for many people, massage therapy care is a luxury, something that they can afford only twice a year after planning it in their schedule and in their budget. People know that they need a massage, like you are probably thinking too while reading these lines, but who knows, maybe you can't afford the time commitment to receive this treatment in your lifestyle every month, and you may also not have the financial resources to treat yourself to massage therapy as much as you would need and want to.

I am well aware of how difficult it is for people to commit to massage therapy.
That is why I work hard everyday and compromise a lot to make my practice as accessible as possible to friends and family who need it. I made drastic life changes to limit the business expenses involved when rendering my service and I avoid raising my prices despite my superior certifications and ongoing attention to further my knowledge in the field. Also, my studio is very small, it is located in an old building where the rent is cheap despite the accessibility. This way, I can provide an accessible location very close to downtown on the corner of two busy streets. You can be insured that when you come for massage therapy with me, profit goes to eco-friendly initiatives and all of it is used efficiently and thoughtfully. I make do with a clean and esthetically nice environment, but there is no luxury involved in the service that I give, just pure professionalism and quality care. Thanks to the great location of St-Laurent street and St-Urbain, anyone is close enough to my studio to be able to receive treatments anytime they want. All this considered, the main result for you as a customer is that your treatments downtown will cost you half the price than a session at a spa for an equal or even better care.

Thinking accessibility involves from my part a humble studio, a humble lifestyle, but it is all in my honor to tell you this story, because making such choices is professionally and ethically responsible. My commitment towards your health is to make sure to try to provide you with the least expensive, yet the highest quality of massage therapy care that you can receive on the island of Montreal, and this, as close to you as possible. According to my master Kam Thye Chow, Thai Yoga Massage is meant to be received if possible once a week, and at least once a month. As they do in Thailand for their medical model, all that you need is a floor mat, a relaxing and clean environment, and a great therapist to enjoy it. I am asking you to recognize the chance that I am giving you to follow the traditional idea of Thai Yoga Massage in a humble studio, because the benefits of proximity, accessibility, and possibility to commit to it on a regular basis is not a luxury anymore, it is now a possibility for you. I am also asking you not to wait until you have pain or feel very bad before you come to see me. Thai Yoga Massage is also a preventative health care, and it is now possible for you, thanks to the philosophy of humbleness, to reap the benefits of accessible therapy.

Relieving symptoms of herniated disks with massage therapy

posted Jun 5, 2010 5:45 AM by Marilène Gelinas

As part of my extensive massage therapy training, I was taught a specific series of movement that help relieve the symptoms of pain when suffering from a bulged or herniated disks.

When a disk is herniated, the bones (vertebrae) that form the spine (backbone) are cushioned by small, round, flat discs. When these discs are damaged from an injury, normal wear and tear, or disease, they may bulge abnormally or break open. If the herniated disc presses on a nerve root, it may cause pain,
numbness, or tingling. After you have seen your physician and obtained permission to receive massage therapy, Thai Yoga Massage is helpful on your way to recovery.

Working very gently and with respect to the particular mobility restrictions as indicated by the physician, it is possible to help relieve muscular and nervous tension surrounding the spine, and provide safe and satisfying elongating and twisting stretches.

The Thai Yoga Massage session will aim at stretching the back, relieving muscular tensions, toning the postural muscles, making space between the spinal discs, and relaxing the recipient.  Specifically chosen Yoga postures administered by the therapist to the recipient and different touch techniques on the muscles will help to obtain symptoms relief.

Here are a few ex
amples of Thai Yoga Massage postures that you can enjoy to help you in this condition. Photos below are master Kam Thye Chow from Lotus Palm, Montreal doing a demonstration for senior students.

Gentle spinal twists:

It opens up the chest, helps breathing, tones and stretches the lower back muscles and abdomen, and offers the therapist an opportunity to work on localized muscular tensions around the shoulder and on the neck.

Slow assisted spinal elongations:
(assisted mini bridge, cobra, and leg pull)

This posture is an assisted mini-version of the Yoga posture called the bridge. As opposed to when someone tries to do it without assistance, having a professional guiding you in this posture relaxes the muscles of the back, elongates the spine, and stretches the muscles of the hips, thighs, abdomen, and shoulders.  It is also good for blood circulation, digestion, and the immune system.

The therapist can also elongate your spine with a mild version of the classic cobra. Extensions are often recommended exercises for back conditions such as bulged and herniated discs. It tones and relaxes the back, opens up the chest for optimal breathing, and stretches the anterior muscles of the body.

Mild leg pulls, ankle rotations, and foot twists and pulls are also mechanical stretches that I was taught helpful to perform on recipients affected with herniated disks to relieve the symptoms. Some specific acupressure points on the feet are natural anti-inflammatory and pain relievers.

With an attentive awareness, the therapist can use different touch techniques using the forearms, knees, soft fists and palms on the back and along the stiff muscles of the body to help to alleviate the discomfort. Directing our intentions towards healing, the therapist and recipient can also work on the energy lines along the body to consciously promote relaxation and well-being.

Thai Yoga Massage will not cure you, but it will help you heal your condition. Don't forget to ask your physician's permission before engaging into massage therapy, and maintain in the meantime self-care routine such as healthy lifestyle habits to take care of yourself. Being surrounded by cheerful and inspiring people will make time pass faster until you can receive massage therapy by a trained, skilled and caring professional. It is worth the time and necessary monetary investment to take care of your spine. As Ayurveda teaches us in yoga, you are only as old as your spine, so take care of it !

Good luck to Josh and my other loved ones affected with this temporary condition !

Metta Touch and Loving Kindness in Massage Therapy.

I was told twice this week by people who received my massages that I offered "the best massage I have ever received in my entire life!". I do not think that I am a better massage therapist than anyone else, I was just taught what we call the "Metta Spirit", the loving kindness through your touch technique. Being a good massage therapist is not a matter of the type of massage technique that you offer, of how many years of experience you have, or where you received your training. It is a matter of knowing how to apply the Metta Spirit into your hands with your recipient, right here, right now, when they receive their treatment with you. My master Kam Thye Chow has always taught me that the Metta quality of touch is always the best kind of massage therapy to receive.

What is the Metta practice? From the Buddhist Pali text -
Metta (mettaa): Loving kindness, gentle friendship; a practice for generating loving kindness, said to be first taught by the
Buddha as an antidote to fear. It helps cultivate our natural capacity for an open and loving heart. It enriches compassion, joy in the happiness of others and equanimity. The practice of Metta in massage therapy, and also in daily life as a human being leads to the development of concentration, fearlessness, happiness and a greater ability to love.

This being said, you will know when you receive a massage therapy treatment that has Metta in it. This loving kindness in the touch technique throughout the therapeutic treatment has no words to explain the soothing and repairing effect on the body and spirit. A massage without Metta is mechanical, dry, and makes you feel depleted. A massage with the Metta loving kindness replenishes you, it makes you feel like you are in good hands. You feel the good intentions of healing sent to you and flowing through your body from the practitioner's touch. A massage with some Metta in it will be the best massage you have ever had in your entire life, every single time, because it is so good to receive that you forget about all the previous ones before !  It feels focused, professional and complete.

This Metta spirit, when I practice it in my daily life and in massage therapy,  has immediate implications.  One of them is becoming more generous. You don’t need to think about generosity purely in terms of giving material goods or money. We can give our time and energy; we can give our attention; we can give thanks; we can give encouragement; we can give people many things, including Metta. There is no limit to the ways in which we can be generous.  A massage therapy service offered by a therapist who believes in the Metta spirit will be generous and uplifting. The recipient will go home feeling loved, respected, replenished, and so satisfied ! Like a smile, the Metta spirit is free, and contagious ! Try the Loving kindness in your daily life and see what happens around you.

Much Metta to all of you, from the bottom of my heart.

Shin pain and Anterior Tibialis Shin Stretch

posted May 17, 2010 8:01 PM by Marilène Gelinas

Your shins include the Anterior Tibialis muscle, which is on the front of your lower leg. Its action is to flex the foot upwards. It is used when doing any exercise that involves lifting up the foot, such as running, walking, playing tennis, and so on.

Many causes lead to pain and inflammation of this lower limb muscle: tight calves, pronation while running, bad shoes, lack of foot strength.  The good news is that it can be treated and cured without having to stop exercising. Thai Yoga Massage at my studio has been successful at relieving pain and regaining range of motion  for that specific issue for two satisfied marathoners so far this year. Muscular compressions applied to the Tibialis Anterior muscle from the attachment to the origin and at the antagonist calf muscles helps to elongate it and reduce stress and tension on that muscle. Stretching the entire legs via foot twists and leg pulls helps the tendons to relax and the muscles to realign their fibers. Finally, acupressure at the insertion and origin near the marma points and working on the energy lines will provide a deeper relaxation of your painful shins.

Here is the recommended homework stretch for shin pains: sit in seiza, me
aning sit on your ankles, and lean your weigh back on your hands. If its too easy for you, alternatively lift up your knees every thirty seconds.

Another stretch would be for you to lay on your side, and grab your ankle. Feel the stretch on your shins.  Stretch before exercising, and after, and during if needed.  It is also important to ice for ten minutes on your bones, three times a day. You can alternate cold therapy with an epsom salt bath prior to icing again. According to specialists, you don't have to stop exercising, especially if you know the special taping technique for shin pains that reduces the friction of the Tibialis Anterior against the Tibia. It will be my pleasure to show it to you.

Hip Opening-Techniques-d'Ouverture des Hanches

posted May 6, 2010 12:33 PM by Marilène Gelinas   [ updated May 6, 2010 12:41 PM ]

This Saturday, Marilene will be attending an intensive seminar about Hip Opening Techniques with Jeanne Mudie from Ashtanga Yoga Montreal. Thai Yoga Massage therapy will benefit from this knowledge through a deeper understanding of the pelvis system and its mechanisms of release and relaxation.
